The Ring (2002)

The Ring is a 2002 American horror film directed by Gore Verbinski and starring Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, and David Dorfman. It is a remake of the 1998 Japanese horror film Ringu, based on the novel of the same name by Koji Suzuki.

The plot follows journalist Rachel Keller (Watts) as she investigates the mysterious death of her niece and her friends, who all watched a cursed videotape that causes the viewer to die within seven days of watching it. Rachel discovers the existence of the tape and watches it herself, setting in motion a race against time to uncover the truth behind its origins and find a way to break the curse before it’s too late.

The Ring is notable for its eerie atmosphere and use of suspenseful pacing, with the curse of the videotape serving as a ticking clock that adds urgency to the plot. The movie also features strong performances from its cast, with Watts delivering a nuanced and emotional performance as Rachel, and Dorfman delivering a creepy and unsettling performance as the young boy who possesses psychic abilities.

The movie is also known for its iconic imagery, particularly the ghostly figure of Samara crawling out of a TV screen, which has become a staple of modern horror iconography.

The Ring was a critical and commercial success upon its release, and is often cited as one of the most influential horror movies of the 21st century. Its success spawned a series of sequels and remakes, and it remains a beloved horror classic among fans of the genre.
